Best SEO WordPress plugins for improving rankings and AI visibility

Installing WordPress is easy. Getting people to actually find your WordPress website is where things become difficult.

You may have a good-looking website, useful content, fast hosting, and a product or service people genuinely need. But if Google cannot properly understand your pages, or your titles, descriptions, sitemaps, schema, and indexing settings are poorly configured, your website can struggle to get organic visibility.

This is exactly where WordPress SEO plugins become useful.

A good SEO plugin does not magically put your website on the first page of Google. What it can do is make many important SEO tasks easier, from creating XML sitemaps and controlling meta titles to adding schema markup and identifying basic optimization problems.

SEO is also changing. Website owners are no longer thinking only about Google rankings. Visibility in AI-powered search experiences and answer engines is becoming another consideration, which is why newer plugins are introducing AEO, GEO, AI content assistance, llms.txt, and other AI-focused features.

So, which SEO WordPress plugin should you use?

Below, I have covered 15 WordPress SEO plugins, including established options and some newer AI-focused tools. Instead of simply telling you which plugin is “best,” I will explain what each one is designed to do and who may find it useful.

What Should You Look for in a WordPress SEO Plugin?

Before comparing plugins, understand what you actually need.

Imagine you run a local plumbing company in London, a digital marketing agency in India, an eCommerce store in Canada, or a small manufacturing business in Germany. Your SEO requirements will not necessarily be identical.

At minimum, I would look for control over:

  • SEO titles and meta descriptions
  • XML sitemaps
  • Canonical URLs
  • Indexing and robots settings
  • Schema or structured data
  • Social sharing metadata
  • Basic on-page SEO analysis

Depending on your website, you may also need Local SEO, WooCommerce optimization, redirects, Search Console integration, AI assistance, or newer AEO and GEO features.

Here are 15 plugins worth knowing about.

1. Rank Math SEO

Rank Math has grown into one of the most feature-rich WordPress SEO plugins.

It combines traditional SEO features such as XML sitemaps, schema markup, content optimization, internal linking assistance and WooCommerce SEO with newer AI-powered functionality. Its current WordPress listing also highlights AI visibility monitoring and support for local businesses, eCommerce websites, agencies, blogs and other site types.

For example, if you publish an article about “home insurance in Canada,” Rank Math can help you configure the page’s title, description, schema and other SEO elements without manually editing your website code.

Good for: Bloggers, businesses, eCommerce stores and agencies looking for extensive SEO functionality from one plugin.

2. Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is one of the most established names in WordPress SEO, with more than 10 million active installations listed on WordPress.org.

Its biggest advantage for beginners is guidance. Instead of expecting you to understand every SEO concept immediately, Yoast provides real-time SEO and content recommendations while you work.

It also handles important technical elements such as schema and gives website owners tools for controlling how content is presented to search engines.

Good for: Beginners, bloggers, content teams and businesses that prefer guided optimization.

3. All in One SEO (AIOSEO)

AIOSEO is another major WordPress SEO plugin, with more than 2 million active installations according to WordPress.org.

It combines XML sitemaps, schema, meta optimization and SEO analysis with more specialized functionality such as Local SEO and rank-tracking related features.

For a business with hundreds of pages, having these functions inside one SEO ecosystem can make management easier than combining several smaller plugins.

Good for: Business websites, local businesses, marketers and growing WordPress sites.

4. SEOPress

SEOPress is particularly interesting for agencies and website owners who care about flexibility and privacy.

Along with titles, descriptions, XML sitemaps, redirects and schema, SEOPress now provides AI-generated metadata and features aimed at AEO and GEO. Its current WordPress listing includes llms.txt support, AI search functionality and integration with multiple page builders.

Its white-label approach can also be useful for agencies managing websites for clients.

Good for: Agencies, developers, privacy-conscious businesses and advanced WordPress users.

5. GEO Plugin by Squirrly SEO

Search is expanding beyond the traditional list of Google results.

The GEO Plugin by Squirrly SEO focuses on SEO together with AEO and GEO, with the aim of improving visibility across traditional search and AI-powered discovery platforms.

This makes it an interesting option for businesses already thinking about how their brand and content are understood by AI systems.

Good for: Marketers and businesses experimenting with AI search visibility.

6. Slim SEO

Not every website needs an SEO dashboard filled with settings.

Slim SEO takes a more automated approach. It can handle common SEO elements such as meta tags, schema and sitemaps while keeping the plugin relatively lightweight.

Think of it as an option for someone who wants WordPress to handle many basic SEO configurations without spending hours adjusting settings.

Good for: Small websites, beginners and website owners who prefer simplicity.

7. ThinkRank AI SEO

ThinkRank AI SEO represents the newer generation of WordPress plugins combining conventional SEO with AI-oriented optimization.

Its feature set includes meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, schema, Search Console functionality, Local SEO and newer concepts such as llms.txt, AEO and GEO.

Good for: Website owners who want to explore traditional SEO and emerging AI-search optimization from the same plugin.

8. Xagio SEO & AEO

Xagio approaches SEO with a strong focus on AI and automation.

Its features include AI-powered metadata, keyword clustering, content assistance, schema and rank tracking. This may appeal more to SEO professionals managing larger optimization workflows than someone who only needs to change a page title occasionally.

Good for: SEO professionals, agencies and users interested in AI-assisted SEO workflows.

9. SEO SIMPLE PACK

Sometimes you do not need an entire SEO platform.

SEO SIMPLE PACK focuses on basic SEO functionality, including the ability to configure meta tags and OGP information for individual pages.

For a simple website where you mainly need control over how pages appear in search and social sharing, that narrower approach may be enough.

Good for: Simple WordPress websites with basic SEO requirements.

10. SmartCrawl SEO

SmartCrawl combines SEO checking and content analysis with practical technical features such as XML sitemaps and 301 redirects.

It is designed to simplify optimization rather than requiring website owners to configure every technical SEO element manually.

Good for: Small businesses and WordPress users looking for SEO analysis alongside technical tools.

11. SiteSEO

SiteSEO positions itself as a straightforward WordPress SEO solution focused on improving search visibility without making configuration unnecessarily complicated.

It can be worth exploring if you want an alternative to the larger established SEO suites and prefer a simpler interface.

Good for: Beginners and small to medium WordPress websites.

12. Simple SEO

As the name suggests, Simple SEO focuses on the essentials.

It allows website owners to modify meta titles and descriptions across WordPress pages and posts, including default settings.

If all you need is basic control over metadata, installing a huge SEO suite may be unnecessary.

Good for: Small websites requiring basic metadata management.

13. CrawlWP SEO

CrawlWP combines standard WordPress SEO functionality with indexing-focused tools.

It covers meta titles, schema, redirects and XML sitemaps while also offering indexing functionality for search engines including Google, Bing and Yandex.

That combination can be interesting for publishers or businesses frequently adding new content.

Good for: Content-heavy websites and users interested in indexing management.

14. GetGenie

GetGenie sits somewhere between an SEO plugin and an AI content assistant.

It combines AI writing features with keyword research, NLP-based analysis, SEO assistance, AEO and GEO functionality.

For example, rather than using one plugin for basic SEO and another tool for AI-assisted content research, GetGenie attempts to bring more of that workflow into WordPress.

Good for: Bloggers, content marketers and teams producing content regularly.

15. SureRank SEO

SureRank focuses heavily on making SEO approachable.

Its features include meta tags, schema and structured data, XML sitemaps, Open Graph previews, robots.txt and Search Console-related functionality. The plugin describes itself as lightweight and beginner-friendly, with an emphasis on avoiding overly complicated SEO settings.

Good for: Beginners, small businesses and users who want essential SEO controls without an overwhelming dashboard.

Which WordPress SEO Plugin Should You Choose?

There is no single plugin that makes sense for every WordPress website.

If you want a broad collection of SEO features, you might start by comparing Rank Math, Yoast SEO, AIOSEO and SEOPress.

If simplicity and performance matter more than having dozens of controls, Slim SEO, SureRank or one of the simpler metadata-focused plugins may be worth considering.

If your strategy is already moving toward AI search visibility, plugins such as ThinkRank, Xagio, GetGenie or Squirrly’s GEO-focused solution introduce AEO and GEO features that may be relevant.

One important point is often missed:

Do not install five full SEO plugins because five sounds better than one.

Multiple plugins trying to control the same canonical URLs, schema, sitemaps or metadata can create conflicts. Even other WordPress plugin developers specifically build conflict detection around major SEO plugins to prevent duplicate SEO output.

Choose the SEO plugin that fits your website, configure it properly, and understand what it is doing.

An SEO Plugin Is a Tool, Not Your SEO Strategy

This is the most important thing to remember.

Getting a green SEO score does not automatically mean a page deserves to rank.

An SEO plugin can help you tell Google what your page is about. It cannot make an unhelpful page useful.

Your actual results still depend on factors such as search intent, content quality, website structure, internal linking, technical performance, authority and whether your page genuinely answers what people are searching for.

For example, suppose two businesses publish a page targeting “best accounting software for small businesses.” One spends 20 minutes making every SEO plugin indicator green. The other studies what small business owners actually need, compares realistic use cases, answers pricing questions, explains limitations and then properly optimizes the page.

The second website has done the more important part of SEO.

Use your WordPress SEO plugin to make optimization easier, but do not let the plugin become the strategy itself.
